Missouri AG pushes to remove Iron County Sheriff from office

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Attorney General filed a petition Thursday in an effort to remove the Iron County Sheriff Jeffrey Burkett from office.Burkett and two other Iron County deputies were arrested in March and accused of helping a man in a parental kidnapping plot.Charging documents say that in February, a 62-year-old man named Donald Gaston sought to take his daughter after an argument with the child’s mother. Prosecutors say Burkett lied to a 911 dispatcher to report that the mother had kidnapped the girl, and falsely accused the woman of putting the child in danger. Ultimately, the girl remained with her mother. Revisting Mike Shildt’s comments on his Cardinals departure Bailey's petition alleges that Burkett is unfit to hold office after allegedly helping Gaston in a plot to kidnap the child. “As Attorney General, I will always work to hold accountable those who refuse to do their job as required by Missouri statute,” said Attorney General Bailey. “Missourians hav...

Dean Cain reveals he's leaving California over state's 'terrible' policies

Dean Cain is the latest celebrity to leave the Golden State. In an interview with Fox News the "Lois & Clark" star revealed he moved to Nevada because of his issues with some of California's "policies.""I love California. It's the most beautiful state," he told the network's Brian Kilmeade on Wednesday. "Everything's wonderful about it except for the policies. The policies are just terrible. The fiscal policies, the soft-on-crime policies, the homelessness policies."Real estate sources told TMZ that Cain sold his mansion for $6.25 million, which went for $1 million under his original asking price. The actor listed his home in March and it sold in May. Cain's departure follows actors Mark Wahlberg and Scott Baio, who also left California."The things that our leaders in California have been doing have driven out anybody who can really afford to get out. People are flocking out of there in droves," he said. Wahlberg also moved to Nevada to give his kids "a better life," he revealed...

Truckers protest AB 5 after Los Angeles ends hauling program contract

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 14:09:30 GMT

Dozens of truckers protested in front of Los Angeles City Hall Thursday morning after they received news that the city was ending its contract with them. The As-Needed, Haul Truck Program has been running since the 1890s, but the city notified the drivers at the end of last month that the 2021-23 contract would not be renewed due to a pair of state laws: Assembly Bill 5 and Assembly Bill 2257.AB 5, which was intended to crack down the practice of classifying workers as independent contractors as opposed to employees, in particular has drawn scrutiny from a variety of workers and industries. Multiple protesters at City Hall Thursday morning targeted that law, carrying signs claiming that the law "destroys livelyhoods" and should be repealed. They also emphasized that the vast majority of the drivers in the program are people of color.City officials, however, say their hands are tied by the laws, and they have no choice but to end the program. Ray Romano and Brad Garrett Talk Pete Davidson’s Bupkis

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 14:09:30 GMT

Emmy FYC season is here which means “For Your Consideration” events and billboards have popped up all over town, once again touting TV shows to L.A. based Emmy voters (despite the writers strike and what looks like an impending SAG strike). Not all shows are worthy, of course (The Kardashians just held an FYC event this week at the DGA…for some reason). It remains to be seen what will actually score a nod this year, but Peacock has some well-deserved confidence about its slate and one show in particular tops the list: Pete Davidson and Lorne Michaels’ BUPKIS.The show, loosely based on Davidson’s life,  is quite brilliant, effortlessly walking the line between Curb Your Enthusiasm cringe comedy and heartfelt family drama.  If you don’t have Peacock, and haven’t seen it yet, you’re in luck. The network just did a surprise drop of the critically-acclaimed second episode on YouTube yesterday. They’ll also broadcast it on NBC this Saturday before Saturday Night Live (wh...

Should California residents have the right to housing? That might be up to voters

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 14:09:30 GMT

California voters could decide if having a place to live should be a constitutional right for state residents.Working its way through the legislature is a proposed constitutional amendment that guarantees a “fundamental human right to adequate housing for everyone in California.” The measure holds state and local governments responsible for fulfilling a right to housing, which could include boosting housing production, tenant protections, repurposing vacant properties and housing subsidies. If ultimately adopted by voters, California would be the first state to guarantee the right to housing in its constitution.“California is at the epicenter of the housing crisis,” said Assemblymember Matt Haney, D-San Francisco, who introduced the legislation. “We have more Californians living on the street than anywhere else in the nation.”California has the highest rate of people experiencing homelessness in the U.S., with 30% of all people in the U.S. experiencing homelessness residing in Califo...

Larry Magid: Apple’s Vision Pro could be good for Meta

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 14:09:30 GMT

I wasn’t able to attend Monday’s big Apple event in-person. But I watched it live and read several reviews. While I haven’t had a chance to try on Apple’s new Vision Pro, I have used several other VR headsets, including Meta’s Quest Pro, which I own and have used quite a bit, including to help write ConnectSafely safety guides about the device, in partnership with Meta.Reminded of Steve Jobs announcementsLarry Magid Based purely on Apple’s demonstration and description of the Vision Pro, I came away impressed. It’s a familiar feeling. I attended nearly every keynote and product announcement during Steve Jobs’ tenure at Apple, and even while he was at NeXT, Jobs was almost always able to suck me into his famous “reality distortion field” and convince me – however temporarily – that whatever it was he was announcing was the greatest product ever. That feeling didn’t always last, but it still got me excited.Jobs’ successor, Tim Cook, is an incredibly competent CEO, and altho...
