TasteFood: This grilled swordfish is all about the sauce

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:39:57 GMT

It’s officially grill season. While you’re brushing off the grill grates and prepping your proteins and vegetables, don’t forget to make a bright and zesty sauce for serving. Herbaceous, citrusy condiments, such as salsas and pestos, will complement and elevate your charred grill food. And zhoug is one sauce you should consider adding to your repertoire.Zhoug (pronounced zoog) is a ubiquitous Yemenite condiment composed of fiery green chiles, fresh leafy herbs and ground spices, including cardamom, caraway, coriander and cumin. Toasting and grinding whole spice seeds is worth the extra step and will deliver the deepest, most fragrant flavor to the sauce. The toasting method is easy: Simply heat the whole spices in a small skillet until fragrant, then finely grind them in a mortar or spice grinder. For the cardamom, crack open the pods to release the small dark seeds and discard the pod shells. (To do this, place the pods on a work surface and bang them with the bott...

What’s behind Oakland cat’s refusal to go inside the (litter) box?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:39:57 GMT

DEAR JOAN: Our 3½-year-old male cat, Orion, occasionally doesn’t squat in the litter box. He steps in with his behind facing out of the box and lets loose all over the floor. He has been diagnosed with crystals and is mostly on a wet food urinary diet (c/d). The little dry food he does get is a c/d variety as well.We have tried buying litter boxes with doors, but the other two cats refuse to use them. Orion has figured out how to use one box with a door, but seems to prefer the ones without doors.Otherwise his behavior is normal and he’s very affectionate and playful. Do you have any idea why he might be doing this and what we could do to help him stop?We try to clean the boxes regularly and wash them and change the litter at reasonable intervals.— Rod Miller, Oakland DEAR ROD: The first thing that comes to mind is also the easiest to remedy. The litter box might be a tad too small for Orion. While cats seem happy to squeeze themselves into tiny spaces, that doesn’...

Wembanyama could made summer league debut in Sacramento, not Vegas, after NBA draft

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:39:57 GMT

DENVER (AP) — Victor Wembanyama’s next couple of weeks are now set: He’ll be playing in the French league finals starting this weekend, and then the San Antonio Spurs will almost certainly make him the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft on June 22.And if that means the French star’s summer league debut comes in Sacramento instead of Las Vegas in early July, the league is fine with that.NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league doesn’t have a preference regarding the site of Wembanyama’s first game with the Spurs. While the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas is the biggest — all 30 teams attend — and commands the most attention, there are smaller summer leagues that precede the Vegas event by a few days. Sacramento plays host to one of those events, and the Spurs are one of six teams headed there this year.“All summer leagues are NBA Summer Leagues,” Silver told The Associated Press. “I’m very supportive of the Sacramento summer league. I remember when (Kings owner Vivek Ranadive) first came...
